John Lennon made this comment now over 40 years ago and I am in no doubt that 
he was correct for the context in which he intended to say it. He received a great amount of flack for his comments that The Beatles are 'more popular than Jesus now' mainly because they were quoted out of context in a US Teen Magazine. People reacted by both burning Lennon's albums and to a greater extreme, sending him death threats.
